The southern area of United Counties was split off in 1986 as Luton & District, which expanded hugely in Hertfordshire by taking over London Country North West and much of the Sovereign operation in 1990 and was bought by British Bus in 1994. The following year, the company was renamed The Shires, using a variety of local fleetnames, and became part of Arriva through the purchase of British Bus by the Cowie group. It is closely integrated with Arriva's East Herts & Essex, Southend and (until its sale to Burtons) Colchester fleets, and has over 500 vehicles operating in south Bucks, Beds and Herts.
